Three simple things that can help you overcome the madness of the Corona Crisis.
People of planet Earth, what the hell has happened?
Everything was going along great and then out of the blue we have somehow fallen into a crazy nightmare. It seems the whole world has got sick. Two months ago, we were boldly ignoring all the problems of our life, scoffing at AI and climate change and getting all pretend worked up about so many minor things, then blam! Corona struck and the world went haywire. Well maybe not that fast. It didn’t really go berserk until a couple of weeks ago when the stock market caught Corona and now it’s got full blown pneumonia and is struggling to breathe.
What a nightmare.
And there is no cure in sight – especially for the market, the ‘doctors’ are still throwing around all sorts of random diagnoses for why people’s funds and savings are bleeding out on the table.
Well just like many of you, I’m not immune to any of this.
My wife is forcing me to wear a face mask when I leave the front door and our investment portfolio has been put into a coma, hoping for resuscitation when all the craziness is over.
But I’m not going in to meltdown.
In fact I’m taking it on myself to coach my wife through it all and now I’m making a decision to use my voice to spread some positivity.
That’s what we need now – some genuine backbone – good old stiff-upper-lip, get up and go, never surrender type positivity.
So, how do we stay positive during the Corona Crisis?
How to Stay Positive During the Corona Crisis
We start by staying calm.
I recently quoted Rudyard Kipling in another article:
“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs … Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it …”
Rudyard Kipling: How To Be A Man
This is a very rough paraphrase, but I believe the essence is true. He’s talking about being a man – given that was a long time ago, I figure maybe I can reappropriate to being a human.
We need to stay calm.
And if we can stay calm, then we can make the right moves and we can end up winning the day.
I recall the efforts of Winston Churchill and the people of London. ‘Stay calm and carry on’, that was the motto, or something like it. They literally had armies of hell at the doorstep and screaming demons dropping destruction on their heads, destroying homes and killing defenceless civilians. And what did they do?
They staid calm, they took a few hits, they rallied, and then they won the day.
Stay calm and rouse yourself to fight the Corona Crisis.
We will get through this and life will go on once more as it has before.
Then we set our focus.
“Focus is power!” It’s one of Tony Robbins biggest catch phrases. What we focus on is what we get. If we drive around focusing on all the things we could hit, it’s pretty certain we’re going to hit something. You need to look where you want to go and then go there.
Right now I see the news streaming a constant wall of Corona crisis, Virus, Death, Crash, Bear Market, Worse than before … and on and on.
If that’s what we focus on, then we will get misery and fear and we end up driving the car off the cliff.
Instead focus on what happens after the crash – how will this get better. Or focus on what’s good, like the fact stocks are on sale and when it’s all over they’ll make you a fortune. Or focus on the fact that you still have food, shelter, a family.
Listen to a good song.
Play a game.
Take the dog for a walk.
Or do anything.
You can literally focus on anything.
I recall American Beauty – the bag blown in the breeze – it’s beautiful.
Anything that makes you feel good. And then focus on how we get through and how we survive and thrive in the years ahead after all the madness.
The most important is get into a good state
This way of focus – looking for joy, looking for gratitude, looking for beauty, is the great first step.
If we focus on fear or the unknown monster rampaging through China, Italy, Iran … then we will be in a state of paralysis, cold shock, that does nothing for us, our family, or the world.
If we focus on loss, we will crawl into our little shells and pray for the end to come painlessly.
But if we focus on gratitude, we realise none of that matters. We have our bodies, we have food, we have shelter, we have a million modern miracles to feel wonderful about.
And timeless wonders – a wife, a child, or whatever you have -for me that’s everything.
Focus on fighting and winning.
And if you can’t, then drop down and give me 20. Go for a run. Turn up that awesome pumping song that makes you feel like a rampaging Viking.
Get into a peak state and then take on the challenges of your life.
Final Thoughts
No matter what happens, we’re going on.
The world will go on.
A new day will dawn and the sun will shine out all the clearer.
So don’t drop the ball.
Stay calm, focus on the good, get grateful and get in a positive state and lets go out to beat Corona and fix the economy.
