You Absolutely Should be Excited About Your Life
Life is an interesting thing. We are all born on this lonely planet, out in the middle of some random solar system, in the middle of a great big universe. Wherever this is, or why we’re here, or where it all came from is a mystery we will never know.
Along with that, we are born, magnificent creatures, with such logic, beauty, power and wisdom, that defy all comprehension of our situation on this random rock floating out in the middle of space.
And yet, here we are.
Here we are and here we find ways to fill up our time.
Now, I’m not going to go through all the ways that people conjure to fill and explain their days. But to boil it down to the basic end result of all this action and thriving for purpose, let’s get to the simple question – how do people feel?
So, how do you feel? Are you Excited about your life?
Are You Excited About Your Life
I look around and I see a big divide, I see some people living with great abundance of wealth and joy, and others wallowing in all the miseries of life. And of course, most of us are somewhere on that human/social spectrum.
Those excited and those uninspired:
For those living the good life, it seems they have purpose, they have certainty, they have vision and an understanding that makes them excited about their days, their jobs, their relationships and all that is life.
However, on the other side, and looking through the lens of the news and popular media, it seems to me that a huge proportion of the population are stressed, medicated, depressed, overworked, underpaid, uninspired, abused, addicted, overwhelmed and just not very well adjusted.
Why, on this floating rock in the middle of nowhere, is there need for such depressing conditions.
Is it a choice? Or a result of our Human Condition? Is it a ghost haunting our social institutions? A glitch in the system…
Whatever it is, these problems of the world show that many people are not excited by life.
Signs of un-excited Life
We can all spot these signs of un-excited life.
I see Average Joe who wakes up already feeling tired, dying to hit the snooze button and check out for a little longer. And I see Average Jill drag herself to work, needing way too much coffee to get ‘up and about’. Then, there’s little Johnny off to school, complaining that he doesn’t want to go because he’s, sick, or tired, or bullied, or depressed, or suicidal.
What a strange way to live.
With no vibe, no juice, no energy or vigour. They’re doing life by the numbers – first I go to school, then I get the job, then I settle down, do the job, watch TV, drink too much, get old and deal with what comes next.
You can call me crazy, but I think life should be much more exciting. Life should have more purpose than following the same old, same old.
Here’s a couple of things to get you more excited about Life.
Get Excited by Knowing What You Want
This is the first big problem. People don’t have purpose. If you have no purpose, then you can’t get excited.
There is nothing pushing you or pulling you to get up and about. You just have responsibility, obligation, chores and base needs driving you around the busy world. Then there’s lack of satisfaction, because none of it really matters when there’s no big purpose. And that lack of satisfaction leads to self medication, and social comparison, and self questioning and all those things that make us feel so uninspired.
The Answer is Purpose
When you have a purpose. And I mean a big exciting purpose that lights you up and makes you feel good, it makes you feel excited, then you want to get up. You want to take on the challenges, do the work and strive to improve. And you feel invigorated, driven, pushed, pulled and prodded by the forces of inspiration and motivation until you achieve your purpose.
And the beautiful thing is we live on a rock in the middle of nowhere. Which means you can literally imagine any purpose you want.
Any Purpose You Want
You could even say, I love drawing pictures, and I’m going to make that my life work. To me that sounds ludicrous. But then I’m reminded of Picasso and Rembrandt and so on. They lived inspired and rewarding lives, painting pictures. Insane if you ask me, but they got away with making pictures their life purpose.
Or even worse:
You can literally say, I love fighting so much I want to do it all the time, and get paid for it. Sounds crazy, right? Just look at Tyson Fury or Connor McGreggor or Floyd ‘the Money’ Mayweather. Now when I type it out, it sounds nuts. My purpose is fighting. How can that work? But look, they live like kings.
Choose Your Purpose
Or I can say I love playing cards, or video games, or surfing, saving the lives of poor kids in Africa…
Service and contribution
You can choose to have whatever purpose you want. And you can have mountains of success in any field you choose.
You just have to choose.
Find your purpose, find a way to make it work, and get excited about your life today.
But be careful and choose wisely.
Get Excited for What You Need
You need to be careful, because this is the second big problem.
A lot of people have purpose, but they’re chasing the wrong thing.
They make work their purpose and so they are always working. They don’t take the time to think if it’s rewarding, or satisfying; it’s work and they’ve made it their definition of their importance. But if that work is not fulfilling, it will ultimately lead to frustration. That frustration will lead to anger, or depression, or self-medication.
Others make money their idol, and they count their joy in dollar signs. Now don’t get me wrong, money can buy mountains of joy, but if you don’t have any access to joy in the first place, the money will do little to make you happy. But still some people feel if they just make the million, then they’ll be happy. And there’s so many stories of people with all the fortune and fame in the world, but no joy at all. Right now I’m thinking of Tyson Fury. He beat Klitchko and became the champion of the world with millions of dollars and his whole life fell apart and he was begging for death.
Now, we could go on: I want fame, or that one girl who’s perfect, or that record, or whatever…
If the wants aren’t fulfilling then they will leave you uninspired.
Now, don’t get me wrong, all of these wants can indeed be very satisfying. But the trick is to know why you want them and get down to the real need that you are chasing. What is that need that you have and what will truly satisfy you.
