What is character? Do you have the character to achieve great success?
I believe character really is one of those things that needs to be taught in schools, and is a skill for success in the future.
Successful character Traits
Here are the 5 initial character traits that are helping me, and others, to build our way towards success.
- Hard Work
- Positive mindset
There are many more, but these are the ones I needed to develop to get started.
So, What is Character?
Character isn’t one thing; it’s the pattern a person demonstrates by how they interact with others and how they treat themselves. A person with “good character” acts, thinks, and feels in a way that matches some commonly accepted “good” traits, like being honest, respectful, responsible, caring, fair. What is good character | Talking with Trees Character …
So, we are looking at the traits that define the character of successful people. They are the ways successful people behave and act that make them successful.
How does character influence success?
Character is a collection of personality traits. So we are looking at the personality traits that successful people have. Those traits are the the things that drive success.
Those are the beliefs, behaviors and ways of being that lead these people to have success.
Character traits further influence success by shaping a person’s reputation.
Success is not just a feeling or state of mind. It can be, but we mostly see success in terms of our personal standing. And that standing often has a huge impact on our level of achievement.
So, character traits shape how others see us. If we have success character traits, people will acknowledge our successful nature, and that reputation will help up to achieve more by how people perceive us and how they will be willing to work with us.
Therefore character is very important.
Character of Highly Successful People
So the five initial character traits for success, are:
- Hard Work
- Positive Mindset
Character of Success 1& 2:
Perseverance and hard work.
These go without saying.
Success only comes when you can put in the work required to move from where you are now to where you want to be. And generally, that’s a lot of work.
Personally, I don’t think that’s the problem. I think people do work hard and they can work incredibly hard. When they want it. However, most people lack the perseverance to keep it going.
If you want it, you must work hard, you must get stronger, and you must keep going. This is so obvious that it doesn’t require much elaboration.
If you want success, you must work for it and you must keep striving until you achieve it.
It’s the simple truth.
How to Work Harder and build Perseverance?
Make sure you know what your end goal is. Have a crystal clear vision of what your idea of success is, and make sure you envision it everyday. Also, make sure it is something you really want.
You may think dreams of millions of dollars are the idea of success. But generally, that goal of millions of dollars isn’t going to work. Because at the end of the day, we don’t really want piles of paper, or O’s on a screen. We also don’t really want to doo the kind of work it takes to earn a million dollars.
If you want to ensure you can do the work and you won’t give up, make the vision of success what you really want. We don’t really want the piles of cash, we want the ability to go wherever we want and do whatever we want. So dream that everyday. Then push yourself to do the work so those goals become a reality.
Character of Success 3: Belief
Our next major character trait for success is belief.
A successful person is a believer. It is part of their character. And by that I don’t mean they are a religious believer or a spiritual believer, though they very well might be, and that kind of belief is very helpful when it is channelled correctly.
Believe in Self
By belief, we mean they have belief in themselves – they believe they are capable of doing what is required. Or they believe they are capable of learning what they need to. They believe in their own ability.
Believe in Goals
They believe in their goals. These people don’t have random, crazy wishes and dreams; they have calculated goals, with plans, and they know that if they follow the plan, and stick to it, they will achieve success.
Believe in Others
They believe in others. They understand the behaviour of others and they have faith that people will behave in a certain way.
These beliefs combine to form a character that is confident and driven. This is required to chase success and have the determination to achieve it. However, the risk they run is boiling over into arrogance. That’s why the successful character needs to be balanced by the other traits.
How to develop belief?
- Start with inventorying what you know you are good at. Take belief from knowing you are capable and draw confidence from your past successes.
- Work on your weaknesses and be honest. Accept that you can not be perfect. Acknowledge that you have flaws, but strive to overcome them. By simply improving 1% you will start to believe in your ability to do more.
- Take on small manageable challenges and grow faith by overcoming. Then, grow to higher level challenges and feel stronger with each step.
- View failure as growth. Successful people fail all the time. But they don’t give up. They see the challenge as a chance to grow. They get better and in the end they overcome.
- Continually review and test your plans. You must have that goal in your mind all the time. And you have to keep defining it and refining the way you are working to achieve it.
- Follow the example of others who have succeeded. If they can do it, so can you.
- Become a student of humanity. Learn from observing the people around you. You will see that humanity always finds a way.
- If you can, take faith in your religious and/or spiritual beliefs.
Character of Success 4: Discipline
All successful people have discipline.
You have no chance of achieving anything worthwhile without discipline. Great goals take persistent effort, day after day.
Human growth requires constant diligence to ensure we are growing and not slipping. Highly advanced ventures run on systems and routines that require continual maintenance and appraisal. (Read more about Systems and Routines for success.)
Discipline is required to ensure that things get done and ensure that things are maintained and continually improved.
We need to maintain our body and fitness, so we can push ourselves to do the hard work required to succeed. That takes discipline.
We need to reach deadlines and maintain high quality. That means discipline.
And so on.
Discipline of Self
Less obviously, discipline includes integrity and honesty.
We need to be disciplined to keep appointments; to maintain networks and relationships; do what we say we will do; and be honest with ourselves and those who work for us. And we need discipline to keep our focus on servicing the people who elevate us in the world.
We only really achieve great success by providing value to others, and it takes discipline for us to focus on that and to forget the temptations of greed, laziness, indulgence, jealousy and so on.
Success is never a short game. It needs discipline to maintain the energy and do the right things that ensure success.
How too Build Discipline
Discipline comes from developing routines – (read Systems and Routines for success.)
- Keep your eye on the positive goal and keep forcing yourself to do the daily grind.
- Make it a daily practice to envision your big goal. Plan regularly the yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily steps you need to take.
- And develop the daily routines that tick all the boxes and do all the things you need to do to achieve your success.
- You can also boost motivation by rewarding yourself or punishing yourself.
- And if you need to, employ assistance from friends, family and/or professionals.
5: Positive/Growth Mindset
The next character trait I’ve learned to develop is the positive mindset. And I would link that together with the growth mindset.
(Read about these and related ideas in a previous article: Challenge Mindset: Challenge Leads to Success.)
Successful people are positive about life and positive about opportunities. They have good energy and they are confident. They see that the future will be better than the past. They acknowledge how wonderful life is at the moment. They are grateful and respectful for their advantages and for the work of others.
They know that there will be good times and bad times, but they know the bad time is the time to plant seeds and work hard, and the good time is to reap and enjoy the rewards. And they stay positive that good times will keep coming around.
In terms of growth, they are positive about challenges and they don’t let failures stop them. They simply see challenge as a chance to grow, they welcome it, and when they fail, it means they need to get stronger and try again. They are positive that they can overcome and that the effort is worth it.
Bonus Character of Success: Empathy
As a bonus for reading this far, I’m going to add empathy.
Successful people have a well developed sense of empathy. They are aware of how people feel and they care. It is this care that drives them to solve problems; big problems that have massive value for human kind and the planet we live on.
It is this empathy that attracts their customers, drives their fans, and creates their great products and services and builds their legacies.
How to build empathy?
That’s a really tough question.
It starts with gratitude. When you start with any other driving emotion, you end up looking at your self more than others. But when you live in a state of gratitude, you start to see how connected people all are, and how much we do need each other. This mindset gets us to think about our place in community and to start feeling grateful for the blessing of others and how we may be a help to others.
It also starts by acknowledging what you feel and trying to see those feelings in others. You may start by looking for correlation. For example, you know people at a funeral feel sad, so what does that look like? What are the signs? How can we help?
Or learn from the great stories of history and literature. Learn from the joys and suffering of your people. Understand the great moments of happiness and horrible times of complaint of the people all around you. And try to envision what you can do to lessen the bad and enhance the good for the people you care about.
Value of Empathy
These are the basic starting points to build empathy. The point is that successful people seduce wealth and influence because they have great value to people. They have great value because they know what people need, want, and what they are feeling. Therefore, it’s an important trait for us to work on developing.
Successful people have character traits that drive success. Learn to develop them and grow towards success.
