Do you spend your time in the past, the present of the future? The future mindset, the habit of envisioning and actively building your future, is one of the great advantages of being an investor.
Do you know what your life will look like in five years?
Have you imagined how you want to live in ten, twenty, thirty years time?
I never did. I mean, I used to imagine what life might be like, and fanatasize about how good life could be, and stress about how I’d probably never get the life I wanted, and worry about what happens if things don’t go so great.
But I never made a clear vision of the life I wanted. I never made a true decision about the life I wanted. And I never had a plan to get the life I wanted.
I lived in the issues of the present, ill-informed by limiting stories of the past, and hoping for a happy future.
I don’t live like that anymore. I live with for the future and I know I have a great life ahead.
The Future Mindset
The future mindset is the mindset of investors.
My whole view on my life has changed since I became an investor. An investor always looks to the future. They obviously live in the present, and are informed by the past, but more than most they look to the future and plan how they want things to be going forward.
Investors invest in stocks today looking for a dividend over time, or a price increase in time. They evaluate their positions based on where they are now and how much growth they need for the future. Investors look at opportunities, options, investments, returns and risk all geared towards the future outcomes they want.
So what’s the true benefits of the Future Mindset?
Future Mindset is Inspiring
When we look to the future, we are able to see unlimited potential instead of limiting experiences and beliefs.
Those who look to the past, see what they used to be capable of and compare what they expect to get. But looking to the future, we see that the unexpected is possible and we can improve our capabilities over time.
Invest Towards the Future
As an investor, we know about the power of compounding.
Investors can make massive returns, but generally not on the spin of one wheel or the turn of one card. Investors know, if they plant the seeds early and they safeguard their investments, and they balance their risk, then in the long run those little seeds grow into something massive.
That is inspiring. It’s not like: ‘I want to live in a beach house, drive a Ferrari and throw hundred dollar bills around, and I want it right now.’ This doesn’t work because you know as soon as you see you don’t have it and you’re nowhere near having it, you give up.
But if the dream is more like: ‘if I put away a couple of grand every month and I sacrifice now, then in 10-20 years time I’ll be financially free’, well that’s possible and that will actually inspire you to action.
Building towards the Future
And if the story is: ‘if I start a business now and I do it smart and I make it my life time mission to be completly awesome, then I’ll spend my life doing something for me, and if it is a success, then I run the chance of making millions, then that’s achievable and very inspiring.
The Future Mindset is Motivational
The image of the future gets you to do the things that will get you what you want in the future.
When you live in the present and dream of good things happening, they hardly ever do. Then you get frustrated and you might try something. But in the present mindset, you feed off immediate results. When things don’t explode and come to you in a wave of awesome, well you get dejected. Then you throw in the towel, or you do something over the top.
A long term investor knows it doesn’t work like that. You plan your results for the future and you plant seeds. Overtime those seeds grow into something substantial. Or if you have a business idea, you know it won’t go from 0-100 massive success overnight. But as an investor you know if you start now, by researching, cultivating leads, working on your skills, developing networks and so on, then when the time comes you will be able to launch a successful business.
The Future Mindset Helps you Live Longer
Looking to the future gets you to take care of yourself. As an investor, you want to live longer because you have a view for longevity. You take care of yourself because you want to live in a strong healthy body in your old age.
That thinking stops you from drinking and smoking and other things because you want to be in a good state to enjoy the fortune that will grow bigger and bigger the older you get.
The Future Mindset Gets You to Think BIG
The future mindset gets you to think epic. You imagine legacy, what you leave to the world, how you will be remembered and what you will leave for your family.
When you think on this level you are more motivated and inspired to use massive action instead of small actions. You are inspired to do great work that will carry your name and your brand in the future.
You want to take care of your family and you want to make them proud. It’s that kind of thinking that launches a great company, builds a massive portfolio and does great things in the world.
And it’s that kind of mindset that makes you feel great every day doing something big and worthwhile. And that will help to power you through the tough days.
Final Thoughts
One of the greatest side effects of becoming an investor is this future mindset.
The future mindset is a habit. It is the mindset of envisioning things the way you want them and planning to bring them into reality, in the future.
This makes the impossible possible, inspires you to go big and live proud, and it motivates you to do the 1% necessary things every day that leads to a great future.
Start imagining your future today.
