The key ingredient to keep you on your path to success is the power of faith. Here’s how to boost your faith and make your dreams a reality.
We all have dreams, but we don’t all have the drive to make them a reality.
And what if that was the only difference?
What if you got all the things that you went after?
I know, that’s a crazy idea right? That goes against everything we’ve been told.
But if we really think about it, isn’t that the big difference.
Those who got what they wanted had absolute faith and they gave everything.
The Power of Faith
Those great people who got what they wanted, got it because they had the power of faith.
Steve Jobs went after his big vision. And nothing said he was going to get his vision. He was a strange, nerdy, hippie kid when he suddenly decided he was going after the personal computer and going to change the world.
And we could say the same of thousands of others. Bill Gates, yes he was really smart, but there was nothing that gave him the unfair advantage over other smart people. Carnegie, Ford, Edison, all the great names of success that I know, have followed the same secret. They used the power of faith.
This is the Lesson of Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill literally dedicated his life to the study of success, and these are the great lessons he came to.
First, that you need definiteness of purpose and desire.
(Read more here in my previous article, Turn Desire into Success, in 4 Easy Steps.)
And once you have your purpose and you have the desire to see it through, it’s faith that keeps you going until you have it in your hands.
The Power of Faith
For me, this is obviously a promise I can’t make. I haven’t yet reached my goal of success. However, I’ve made a great start and these lessons are showing me the way to keep going.
And I came to Hill’s Think and Grow Rich at the right time.
A Big Dream
About a year and a half ago my wife and I started our own mission towards success. We started saving every dollar and decided we were going to become investing superstars. My wife took the lead on investing and I started to write again and became dedicated that one day I want to write something great and transition out of teaching.
Furthermore, we asked the universe for a beautiful family, and this year we had a beautiful healthy son. And our dream of success is to be free to take our family traveling around the world, experiencing all the good things life has to offer and living free and happy. And then spending our golden years sharing our wealth with our family and friends and the less fortunate people of the world.
(To read more about path to success, read How to Achieve Financial Freedom Through Investing.)
That’s a big dream for us. And at times it seems ridiculous for us to ask for so much. But then I look at my heroes and I see that they can have it all, and so why can’t I?
So I believe if we can try, really try, then we get it.
But even then, there is no guarantee. There is no proof that we will get what we want. And we are working real hard for what we want – harder every day – and harder still when we get that surge of faith.
And it’s the power of faith that keeps us going.
It’s faith that keeps you pushing on.
The faith that if we do the work and keep pushing and learning and trying new things, we’ll get what we want.
And that faith is not always easy to keep up. Especially when you’re a teacher, and the kids are demanding, and the school is demanding, and you watch others getting by easy, doing the normal average day life.
So how do we keep the faith for success?
In the beginning, I have to admit I struggled. I swung from one week feeling like I was going to knock down mountains and take on the world, to the next week feeling like every move was wrong and every word was stupid.
But then I realized something. I realized, the days I felt super strong, were the days I was taking time to fill my mind with positivity. And the days I felt like an ant trying to push a boulder up the mountain, were the days I just woke up and dived into the work.
The days I read and wrote and listened to Tony Robins and the motivation channel, were days were no matter what happened I was positive and I knew my bright future was mine for the taking. I just had to keep showing up.
And the days I simply let life take over, I let the naughty kids steal my focus, the marking to seem bigger than it was, the little complaints feel like injuries and so on.
So I started to get the idea. You can program faith and faith can keep you charging on, no matter what life throws at you.
As Napoleon Hill put it:
“…faith is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of autosuggestion.” (Hill, Think and Grow Rich, Page. 31)
This is a complicated way of saying – put lots of good positive fuel into your mind and your mind will power on in a positive way.
Feed it Robins and Covey and Hill and Kiyosaki and Procter and those bright sparks on Medium, every day, and your mind will be in a state of faith. You will see possibility and achievement and an open path to success.
Feed it the news and advertising and the rabbit hole of distractions, and your mind will be a mess, ranging from fear to stupidity, to confusion and apathy.
Program faith into your subconscious and you will find success.
How do we program the Power of Faith?
Hill’s first big tip is affirmation. He states:
“Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.” (Hill, Think and Grow Rich, Page 32)
Affirmations are clear statements of purpose that respond to your goals and aspirations.
For example, if you seek wealth, then you make an affirmative statement such as, ‘everyday wealth flows to me quickly and easily’.
By repeating this command to your mind, everyday, twice a day, or writing it down multiple times a day, you program your mind to believe and to have faith.
When I first started out on my mission, I really had little belief in myself and what I was doing. And so I will admit that I did use affirmations and incantations to get into a positive state to start believing.
Now I have a bit of a different approach, which I will discuss further below.
However, I have to admit, in the beginning they helped.
Read more about affirmations here, Achieve Success through Affirmations.
A New Way
Having gone through the affirmations, my brain started to believe a lot more in my capabilities.
Now I follow Hill’s trick of having definiteness of purpose, combined with Tony Robins’ ideas about priming.
Every day I start my day with a priming exercise that recognizes all the things that I am grateful for, and I finish by stating my gratitude for all the great things that are coming my way. In this way, I repeat my purpose and visualize it and try to feel like I already have achieved it. More on this below.
2. Positive material
As already covered, a great way to stay on the path to success is to continually fill your mind with positive fuel.
Since I started my path to success I started reading. I read Investing with Purpose by Mark Aardsma, Unshakeable by Tony Robins, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 8th Habit by Stephen Covey, and now I’m on Think and Grow Rich and next is How to Gain Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. And this list doesn’t count the fiction, or the articles on medium, or the study on YouTube and so on.
Feeding the mind positive material and always striving to improve mentally builds faith. It builds faith by encountering great minds that have achieved the things you want to achieve. It encourages belief in engagement with great ideas, and the confidence you get from knowing more and learning more.
This positive feeling of empowerment through knowledge brings on a state of faith. You know you are continually getting better and making progress. So even if you can’t totally believe in your big vision of success, you know you will be getting better than you currently are now. That means you are capable of achieving greater success. And that keeps you pushing on and surprising yourself.
As stated above, positive visualization is a great practice. Once you have established your vision of the future you want, you imagine it as if you have it right now; you can touch it and hold it and you know beyond doubt that one day you will have it.
We probably already know all about this, but the thing that really makes it powerful is when you can tie this visualization to strong feelings. Feelings like happiness, gratitude, music, sex, love. Emotion is what drives us more than anything in life.
And so in the beginning, I tied my visualizations to gratitude; I felt grateful for all the wealth and good fortune I already had and I said thank you to the universe for all the wonderful things that are coming my way. And I envisioned everything as real and how I will feel awesome when my dreams do come true.
And that worked really well.
My Secret Weapon to getting the Power of Faith
But my secret weapon came when I added love to the mix. My wife and I have faith through love. We got into the habit of being grateful every night. We said, thank you to the universe for all our good things, TOGETHER. And now we look at our son as we do it and we imagine TOGETHER how we are going to have such an awesome life in the future.
We share a beautiful vision for our future and it feels amazing. As such, we push each other to keep believing.
Also, because I want my wife to have an amazing future I try twice as hard and know I will never stop. And because she values my effort and she wants the same amazing things for us, she tries twice as hard as well. And together we feel that all this effort and this mission is something that will make our future amazing, and we start to enjoy the journey. We catch each other when things get tough and remind each other that ‘this too shall pass’ and one day we’ll remember the struggle fondly.
This is about as much faith as we can have.
Hill is a bit more confident:
“In connection with this, … all thoughts which have been emotionalized (given feeling) and mixed with faith, begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart.” (Hill, Think and Grow Rich, Page 32)
So, for Hill, if you do this then you will get the things you want.
We’re still not 100% sure it will all happen. But so far we’re on track to better than we have now and getting closer to that big dream we both have.
And so even if it doesn’t come true, it gives us faith to keep going, and we have the faith that whatever we end up with, it will be better than giving up on our huge, unbelievable dream.
The power of faith is necessary if you want to achieve great success.
If you set a mighty goal that takes great effort and resource to pursue, then you will have no guarantee that you will get it. You will need to manufacture faith to keep you going, striving and working to make that dream become a reality.
Without faith you give up!
I wished of being a great novelist. But I didn’t believe and so I gave up.
And I dreamed of being a rock star. I tried, I lost faith, and I gave up.
And I cursed and begged for so much more, without faith or hope or a plan of action.
I got nothing!
But now we dream of having a great life of freedom and success. We have learned how to manufacture faith. And we are getting closer and closer every day to our goals.
The power of faith is essential if you have big dreams.
And I sincerely hope you have big dreams.
Big dreams make life such a joyous and purposeful journey; a meaningful adventure; and a challenge that keeps you striving to be better, and stronger, and braver and the best that you can possibly be.
Thanks for allowing me to share.
I wish you all the best and hope you keep striving for success.
